Upon admission to a LTC home, spouses may be separated if they a require different levels of care.

Today, Ontario’s LTC Homes Act does not guarantee simultaneous admission for spouses. This was recognized as a problem in 2019. Learn more about regulatory revisions currently before the Ontario Legislature.

Bill 153 "Till death do us part act" Explained...

  • Bill 153, known as the “Till death do us part act”, is currently before an Ontario legislature committee (as of September 2020), 

  • If this Bill passes, residents will have the right not to be separated from their spouses upon admission,

  • and have accommodation made available for both spouses so that they may continue to live together and

  • No similar restrictions are placed on spouses in Ontario's Retirement Home Act.
